The team finished the 1970-1971 season with a record of 17 wins and 7 losses. This was the 5th season as head coach of the Springfield College men's basketball team for Ed Bilik. Edward R. Bilik began teaching physical education at Springfield College in 1959. He earned his BS and MS at Springfield College (1957, 1962) and his Ed.D. at the University of Oregon (1966). Bilik was head basketball coach at Springfield College from 1966 to 1986, during which he compiled an outstanding 322-196 overall record for a.622 winning percentage. He then became director of athletics at Springfield College, where he worked until his retirement in 1999. In 2011, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) awarded him the prestigious Metropolitan Award. Ray Gilbert received his bachelor's degree from Springfield College in physical education in 1963, playing basketball throughout his college career. He later returned to Springfield to receive his master's, while serving as the assistant men's basketball and assistant golf coach from 1963 to 1965. In 1968, Ray Gilbert returned to Springfield College and became a P.E. instructor and the assistant coach for men's basketall. He then was named as assistant athletic director and the men's golf coach in 1977, followed by the women's golf coach in 1980. Gilbert eventaully accepted a position as the Director of Physical Education and Athletics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1987.
