Intramural competition in Field Hockey began at Springfield College in 1954, when students were required to participate in a minimum of 5 practices before competition. In the first season, only two teams were formed, but the foundation was set for steady growth in the sport on SC's campus. As soon as the next year, there were play days set up at nearby colleges to allow all female college students interested, the opportunity to play.
