The Springfield College Field Hockey program started in the 1950s as an intramural sport. The early days consisted of few practices and contests and gradually grew into the intercollegiate sport it is today. The start of an era in Springfield College Field Hockey hits with the hiring of Dottie Zenaty as the Head Coach of Women's Field Hockey in 1970. Coach Zenaty would prove to be most significant in the development of the Field Hockey program at Springfield College both through her success as well as her career dedication to the program. Retiring in 2004, Coach Zenaty amassed an amazing record of 377-233-43 (.610 winning percentage).
