The Royal Canadian Army Cadet is Canada's oldest youth organization. It is sponsored by the Canadian Forces for young people aged 12 to 19 with its aim being to develop in youth the attributes of good citizenship and leadership; promote physical fitness; and stimulate the interest of youth in the sea, land and air activities of the Canadian Forces.
The handwritten date on the back of the photograph indicates that the image is from 1905, however if the image is of Best, the photograph would have been taken much earlier. The subject in the photograph appears to be a teenager and Best, if the photograph was taken in 1905, would have been 25. It is difficult to determine for certain if the person featured in the photograph is Best because of the age of the subject in the photograph as well as the other images of Best that are available. Ernest Best began his career as a student at Springfield College (then the International YMCA Training College), graduating in 1911. He returned in 1913 as a teacher of Religious Education and Normal Religious Work. In 1916 he left Springfield College to go overseas and join the war effort as a Senior Officer with the Canadian YMCA War Services in France. In 1937 he returned to Springfield College as president, a position he held until 1945.
It is believed that this is an image of Ernest Best however it can not be confirmed for sure. When comparing the image to other photographs of Best there is reason to doubt that this is an image of him.
