From the 1920s through the 1960s freshmen united against the sophomore class in a series of friendly rivalries. One of the annual contests included an action-packed rope pull over Lake Massasoit. To the tune of chanting cheers of their classmates, the mighty Freshman rope pull team pulled a fighting crew of Sophs into the icy waters of Lake Massasoit in the 1949 edition of the annual event. In gaining this victory the Frosh earned the privilege of doffing their dinks (beanies) for the remainder of the year. Judging from the number of dinks seen floating on Lake Massasoit immediately following the rope pull, many Frosh were quick to take advantage of their right.
