In a tradition that started in the early 1920s and continues to today, entering students to Springfield College wear beanies when they first arrive. Originally students were required to wear their beanies all year, only to be removed on Stepping Up Day in the spring when they officially moved up from freshman status. Today wearing a beaning is no longer required, though over 90 percent of all entering freshman still elect to wear the beanie and continue the tradition. Babson Library was named after Mr. and Mrs. Paul T. Babson who donated $1 million towards the construction of a new Springfield College library in commemoration of their 50th wedding anniversary.
