ABSTRACT
This collection documents the work of Luther Halsey Gulick (1865-1918) who was a pioneer and national leader in health and physical education in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. From 1887 to 1900 Gulick helped establish and supervise the Physical Department at the International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College). Gulick moved to New York City in 1900, where he worked at the Pratt Institute High School and Russell Sage Foundation. Gulick and his wife Charlotte later founded the Camp Fire Girls. There are reports, correspondence, and essays related to the Camp Fire Girls within the collection. Much of the material in the collection covers Gulick’s professional career in New York City, especially the 1900-1912 period. There are four scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and other materials by and about Gulick dating from those years. Additionally, there is a scrapbook about Dio Lewis, a fellow physical educator, that Gulick created, and there are two bound volumes of outgoing correspondence from the Triangle Publishing Company, which Gulick helped establish at Springfield College in the early 1890s. A large portion of the collection comprises lectures and articles, both published and unpublished, that Gulick wrote between 1897 and 1912. These writings concern a broad spectrum of topics, including physical education, play, hygiene and health, gender roles, camping, folk dancing, and amateur athletics. Also included are correspondence—both incoming and outgoing—as well as minutes, notes, and other records of several of the national organizations in which Gulick was a leader, including the American Academy of Physical Education, the Athletic League of YMCAs of North America, and the Amateur Athletic Union.

HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Luther Halsey Gulick was born on December 4, 1865 in Honolulu, Hawaii; his parents, Luther Halsey Gulick and Louisa Lewis, were both missionaries. He entered the preparatory department of Oberlin College in 1880, but illness forced him to leave before he had completed his studies. In 1885 he became a student in the Sargent School of Physical Training in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the following year Gulick entered the Medical College of the University of the City of New York, receiving a medical degree in 1889. He was married on August 30, 1887 to Charlotte Vetter of Hanover, New Hampshire.
In 1887 Gulick came to the School for Christian Workers (which became the YMCA Training School in 1890 and the International YMCA Training School in 1891 and is now Springfield College). That same year, he and Robert J. Roberts established the School’s Gymnasium Department, which became the Physical Department in 1889. During his time at the School, Gulick instructed such courses as “Anatomy,” “Physiology,” “Hygiene,” “Physical Diagnosis,” “Prescription of Exercise,” “Association Work and Athletics,” “Outdoor Sports,” “Psychology,” “History and Philosophy of Physical Exercise,” “Anthropometry,” “Physiology of Exercise,” and “Gymnastics and Athletics.” Gulick served as the Director and then Superintendent of the Physical Department until he left the School in 1900. Gulick also organized the Department’s earliest summer sessions and correspondence courses.
In February 1891, students and instructors in the Physical Department—including J. Naismith, A.A. Stagg, W.H. Ball, W.O. Black, and W.E. Ninde—established the School’s publication “The Triangle.” Gulick supervised this enterprise, and he was also heavily involved with the Triangle Publishing Company during his time in Springfield. The publishing company seems to have developed out of the publication of the “Triangle” journal, being first credited as publishing the journal in June 1891 (the first publisher was simply given as the Physical Department). Gulick was elected president of this new company, James Naismith was the editor, and Frank N. Seerley was the first business manager. In addition to producing “The Triangle” (which became “Physical Education” in March of 1892), the company published a few of its own books and pamphlets related to physical education during the 1890s, including the earliest publications of the rules for Basketball. Letters and receipts within the collection show that the company also distributed YMCA triangle pins, fitness equipment manufactured by other businesses, and books published by other companies.
Gulick was principal of the Pratt Institute High School, Brooklyn, New York, from 1900-1903. He then went on to serve as director of physical training in the public schools of New York City for three years. In 1907 Gulick organized the child hygiene department of the Russell Sage Foundation and served as director until 1913, when failing health compelled him to resign.
Gulick and his wife Charlotte founded the Camp Fire Girls—the first nonsectarian organization for girls in the United States—in 1910. The organization was incorporated in Washington, D.C. in 1912 as a national agency. Today it is known as Camp Fire USA and holds programs for both girls and boys.
Gulick also designed the inverted, equilateral triangle emblem—denoting spirit, mind, and body—which became the official seal of Springfield College in 1891 and soon after became the _____________________________________________________________________________________________

seal of the YMCA. In December of 1891, one of Gulick’s students and colleagues, James Naismith, created the game of basketball, after Gulick directed him to create a new game to help deal with an uncooperative class at Springfield College.
Gulick was also involved with many other organizations throughout his career, including the Amateur Athletic Union, the Athletic League of YMCAs of North America, the American Academy of Physical Education which he helped found with R. Tait McKenzie and James McCrudy among others and today is known as the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education, the Playground Association of America which later became the National Recreation Association, the American School Hygiene Association, and the Young Men’s Christian Association’s Physical Department and International Committee.
The last five years of his life were devoted to writing and lecturing on physical education, hygiene, and dancing. Gulick was a prolific writer and speaker and frequently sought new and better ways to educate people about physical education, play, hygiene and health, gender roles, camping, folk dancing, and amateur athletics. Despite his own failing health, Gulick accepted an offer from the National War Council in the Fall of 1917 to go to France and make a survey of the rapidly growing work of the YMCA with the American Expeditionary Forces in France. On his return, Gulick presented his report and recommendations to the War Council, and then he began writing his book The Dynamic of Manhood. Gulick died the following year on August 13, 1918.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
This collection documents the work of Luther Halsey Gulick as a pioneer and national leader in health, hygiene, and physical education during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Most of the material covers Gulick’s professional career while he was at Springfield College and while he was in New York City, especially during the 1900-1912 period - there are four scrapbooks of newspaper clippings by and about Gulick dating from those years.
More than half of the collection comprises lectures and articles, both published and unpublished, that Gulick wrote between 1897 and 1912. These writings concern the broad spectrum of topics in which Gulick was interested, and many of them relate to areas and organizations in which Gulick was a national leader, including health, physical education, play and playgrounds, gender roles, camping, folk dancing, child hygiene, and amateur athletics. Many of these texts were lectures delivered, for example, before the Department of Physical Training Summer School, the School of Pedagogy at New York University, and at numerous professional conferences.
Also included are correspondence, minutes, notes, and other records of several of the national organizations in which Gulick was a leader dating mostly from 1898 to 1917. Some of the organizations in which Gulick was involved include the International Committee of the YMCA, the Academy of Physical Education, the Amateur Athletic Union of the United States, the Athletic League of YMCAs of North America, the Camp Fire Girls, Springfield College, and the Triangle Publishing Company. The Camp Fire Girls material includes reports, statements of purpose, and program ideas. Some of the prominent correspondents include George W. Ehler, George T. Hepbron, George B. Hodge, John W. Kelly, Jr., George L. Meylan, F.B. Pratt, James E. Sullivan, members of the A.A.U. basketball committee, and representatives from A.G. Spalding & Bros.
SERIES DESCRIPTIONS
SERIES 1: Biographical Information (undated, 1918, 1960, 1992)
This series includes newspaper articles and obituaries about Gulick and several photographs of him. There are also a brief genealogy and several short biographical sketches written about Gulick by his friends and colleagues. This series has no original order and is arranged chronologically wherever possible. Copies of some biographical information from the AAHPERD collection have been included in this series. Also included in this series is a manuscript from ca. 2003 entitled “‘Sex is Power:’ Luther Halsey Gulick, Emotions, the Body, and a Sexual Economy o f the Male Self in the Early Twentieth Century,” which is by Thomas Winter and is about Gulick and some of the common themes of his life and work.
SERIES 2: Springfield College (1892-1919)
This series contains annual reports, account sheets, receipts, etc. created by Gulick during his time at Springfield College. It also includes information on the numerous books and other writings that Gulick donated to the College’s library as well as information about the Memorial Portrait Fund established by the College after Gulick’s death in order to commission a painting of him for the School. There are also a few handwritten and annotated lectures and other writings that are from the 1890s when Gulick was working at Springfield College. These have been kept with the drafts of the annual reports in order to preserve original order. The account _____________________________________________________________________________________________

sheets and receipts have been arranged chronologically. The timeframe of this series overlaps with much of the correspondence, etc. in Series 3.
SERIES 3: Organizations and Correspondence (1893-1923)
Because much of the correspondence within this collection pertains directly to Gulick’s professional activities with several national organizations, these two areas (correspondence and organizations) have been combined into one series. This series is then divided into seven sub-series. In general, this series comprises Gulick’s incoming and outgoing correspondence related to his leadership roles in various organizations, including the International Committee of the YMCA, the American Academy of Physical Education, the Amateur Athletic Union, the Athletic League of YMCAs of North America, the Triangle Publishing Company, and the Camp Fire Girls. The materials within each of the sub-series are arranged by type and then alphabetically and/or chronologically wherever appropriate.
Sub-Series A: International Committee of the YMCA, 1898
The materials within this sub-series all relate to the international examination given by the International Committee during 1898. These materials include guidelines and test forms. They are arranged by type.
Sub-Series B: American Academy of Physical Education, 1906-1911
In 1906 Gulick and several other professional physical educators created the Academy of Physical Education to organize meetings to discuss their recent work. Academy of Physical Education records include correspondence, minutes, and notes from 1906 to 1911. These materials are in the original order in which they were bound.
Sub-Series C: General Correspondence, 1893-1899
This sub-series comprises Gulick’s incoming and outgoing correspondence that does not necessarily relate to the other organizations within the series. This correspondence is almost exclusively professional correspondence, so there is some overlap between the correspondents in this sub-series and those in the other sub-series. Materials are arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically. The most prolific correspondent in this sub-series is George B. Hodge. Other prominent correspondents include William Blaikie, George W. Ehler, W.E. Day, George L. Meylan, and F.B. Pratt.
Sub-Series D: Amateur Athletic Union, 1898-1899
The Amateur Athletic Union was founded in 1888 in order to help establish and promote standards in amateur athletics. Gulick became involved in the organization in the 1890s, and the A.A.U.’s handbooks from 1897-1916 list Gulick as a member of the Board of Governors and as a member of various committees, including the Legislation Committee and the Basketball Committee. Materials include both incoming and outgoing correspondence from 1898 to 1899, and they are arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically. This sub-series includes correspondence related to the A.A.U. Basketball Committee and materials from prominent A.A.U. figures such as John W. Kelly, Jr. and James E. Sullivan. Other correspondents include William Thayer Brown, Edward R. Cooke, George T. Hepbron, Harry McMillan, George F. Poole, and various representatives of A.G. Spalding & Bros.

Sub-Series E: Athletic League of YMCAs of North America, 1897-1923
Athletic League of YMCAs of North America was formed in the early 1890s in part to establish the Associations’ relationship to the A.A.U., and in part to serve the same functions of the A.A.U. within the Associations. After several years of discussion, a committee was finally formed at the 3rd Annual Physical Directors’ Conference held in Springfield in 1894. The committee, which included Dr. J. H. McCurdy, James Naismith, and Thomas Cornelius, drafted a plan for adoption of such a league. Materials in this sub-series include primarily correspondence (incoming and outgoing), as well as a copy of the League’s constitution and bylaws, promotional statements, and the program for an 1897 sports carnival. Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by correspondent and then chronologically, and the other materials are arranged by type and then chronologically. By far the most prominent correspondent of this series is George T. Hepbron; others include W.E. Day, H.L. Dietz, Charles B. Horton, and George L. Leonard.
Sub-Series F: Triangle Publishing Company, ca. 1891-1895
In February 1891 several students and instructors in the Physical Department of the International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College) created a serial publication entitled “The Triangle” (which later became “Physical Education”). This journal was originally published by the Physical Department itself, but by June of 1891, the Triangle Publishing Company is listed as the journal’s publisher. Presumably, the publishing company developed out of the journal publication. Some of the founding members of “The Triangle” include including James Naismith, Amos Alonzo Stagg, William H. Ball, Walter O. Black, and William E. Ninde. Gulick was elected as the Triangle Publishing Company’s first president, Naismith was the editor, and Frank R. Seerley was the business manager. This sub-series contains two bound volumes of the company’s outgoing correspondence, which concerns the sale of books, manuals, and pamphlets on gymnastics and other fitness topics to YMCAs, German turners, YWCAs, athletic clubs, and public schools. Many letters are water stained, making some illegible. The original order of the volumes has been preserved.
Sub-Series G: Camp Fire Girls, 1911-1917
Gulick and his wife Charlotte founded the Camp Fire Girls—the first nonsectarian organization for girls in the United States—in 1910, and the organization was incorporated in Washington, D.C. in 1912 as a national agency. Materials within this sub-series include quarterly and annual reports, documentation about the programs, policies, and structures of the organization, writings by Gulick about the Camp Fire Girls, writings related to the Camp Fire Girls and patriotism during World War I, and writings about the Camp Fire Girls by other authors.
SERIES 4: Writings, 1887-1917
Throughout his career, Gulick was both a prolific author and lecturer. The materials within this series are an almost exhaustive collection of Gulick’s essays, articles, addresses, lectures, reports, etc., and this series includes both published and unpublished material. The bulk of these texts are either type-written or pages and clippings taken directly from the sources in which they were published. There are few hand-written texts and notes. Included here are 14 formerly-bound volumes (presumably arranged by Gulick himself) of his writings. These volumes have been unbound for preservation purposes, but they remain in their original order. There are also several bound manuscripts in this series. These writings concern the broad spectrum of topics in _____________________________________________________________________________________________

which Gulick was interested, including physical education, play, hygiene and health, gender roles, camping, folk dancing, and amateur athletics.
SERIES 5: Scrapbooks, 1853-1910
In this series are several scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and other ephemera created by or about Gulick including one he put together about physical education pioneer Dio Lewis. Another comprises correspondence about and invitations to a welcoming dinner for Gulick upon his appointment as director of physical training in New York City public schools in 1903. There is one scrapbook of newspaper clippings of reviews of Gulick’s book The Efficient Life (1907). Also included are two scrapbooks of newspaper clippings by and about Gulick dating 1903-1908 and 1907-1910 respectively. The items and articles in several of the scrapbooks have been numbered, presumably by the books’ creator, so those scrapbooks are arranges sequentially here in this series.
Scrapbook 1 (Items #1-254):
The contents of this scrapbook date from March 1903 to September 1908. They are, in general, arranged chronologically, although there are a few items that are undated or are not in order. This scrapbook includes articles about Gulick, about various jobs and positions he held, about the ideas and theories in his writings, about physical training and culture (in schools) and physical training for girls and women. There are also letters from John W Cook, FW Pearsall, unattributed articles (may be by Gulick or just about topics of interest to him), articles and letters to the editor by Gulick. Common topics and titles include: schools and sports/athletics, “St. Nicholas Fund” Volunteers (Christmas charity), books causing injury to students, “Final Report of the Athletic Committee of the Schoolmasters’ Association,” “The Alleged Effemination of our American Boys,” dancing, fads, gymnastics, “Chautauqua” summer school programs, “Team Games and Civic Loyalty,” “The Gang Principle in Civic Education” by William Chauncy Langdon, “Dr Luther Gulick on the Scientific Investigation of the Problems of the Home,” letter on Public Schools Athletic League letterhead to General George W Wingate, health, sanitary conditions, “The Bicycle as a Therapeutic Agent,” “Athletics for City Children,” “Health of School Children,” and “Exercise Must be Interesting.”
Scrapbook 2 (Items #255-346):
All materials in this scrapbook date from January – March 1903. Although they are not chronologically arranged, they are still numbered sequentially. There is some damage (loose pages, torn newspaper articles, etc.), but the scrapbook is still in fairly good condition. The contents start with the announcement of Gulick’s resignation from the Directorship of the Pratt Institute High School (Students’ Bulletin, Vol. II, No. 17, Jan. 30, 1903) and the announcement of his appointment by the Board of Education as Director of Physical Training in the schools of New York City. Following this, there is a letter from “the directors and special teachers of physical training in the public schools of the several boroughs of the city of New York” welcoming Gulick and inviting him to “a reception and dinner at the Hotel Manhattan” (signed by 34 individuals w/ names and schools). There are also a letter to Gulick from Jessie H. Bancroft, of “the committee on Arrangements’” and numerous response letters to Bancroft (accepting the invitation to dinner) from Edward Stevens, William H. Maxwell (NYC Superintendent of Schools), (?) Hull (Clark Institute), Jay W. Seaver (Yale), Henry A. Rogers (President, Board of Ed NYC), Thomas Woods (Columbia), (?) Pratt, Thomas M. Balliet (Superintendent, Springfield), D.A. Sargent , Rachel (?) Fritz, E. Hitchcock (Amherst, also one to Gulick), Edward M. Harturtt (?), Eliza M. Cloohur (?). From the Hotel Majestic, there are 2 presentation cards for Dr. and Mrs. Gulick and the program entitled “Reception and Dinner of Welcome tendered to Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick.” Finally, there are also newspaper clippings about Gulick, his appointment, his ideas, the reception, etc., letter from EA King (Congretational Church Marysvill, OH), lecture/program of study, changes he’s making, etc.
Scrapbook 3 (Items #347-548 plus unnumbered items):
This scrapbook contains several undated items and a few items from 1901 and 1903, but the majority of the materials here date from September 1907 to June 1910. The sequential numbering from the previous two scrapbooks continues, but the numbering stops near the end of this volume. The materials within this scrapbook are almost exclusively newspaper articles about Gulick, the topics that interested him, and his areas of expertise: playgrounds, recreation; childhood hunger, health, the A.A.U. and building a stadium in NYC, the playground association, city life and playgrounds and their relation to crime, the Convention of American Physical Education Association, outdoor recreation, the Russell Sage Foundation, children’s charities, “race improvement,” Fourth of July celebrations and safety, etc., leprosy, conference of charities and corrections, school legislation, health and sanitation, women’s clubs, article w/ images about Springfield’s 1908 4th of July celebration, “safe and sound 4th of July,” public parks, dance, leisure, the family as a unit, and teachers and education. There is also some correspondence, including a letter to Gulick as a representative of the Russell Sage Foundation from AB Poland (city superintendent, Newark), a letter from Arthur L. Hamilton (Superintendent, Pasadena), and a letter from William F. Fox (Superintendent, Richmond).
Scrapbook 4 (unnumbered items):
The articles in this scrapbook date from December 1906 to June 1910 and are mostly arranged chronologically. The scrapbook is titled “Reviews of ‘The Efficient Life’ and Magazine Articles ‘Mind and Work.’” As this title suggests, it contains reviews of the books and discussions of some of Gulick’s key points. Also included are a few seemingly unrelated articles on topics like 4th of July reform (with Springfield, Massachusetts as model city), playgrounds, men’s clothing buttoning up the back as solution for divorce, germs, oral hygiene, the role of teachers, and the Training School anniversary.
Scrapbook 5 (Dio Lewis):
The spine of this scrapbook is labeled “Dio Lewis Scrapbook, and the front cover gives the title as “Dio Lewis Mss. And Miscels. 1853-1898.” There is also a Library of the International YMCA College Bookplate that reads “Gift of Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick, received February 1914.” These materials were presumably collected and put into the scrapbook by Gulick himself. Contents include: published articles and open letters by Lewis, incorporation of “Lewis Normal Institute for Physical Education,” handwritten manuscripts, articles about Lewis’ gymnastic school and his book “The New Gymnastics for Men, Women and Children,” a letter from James F. Fields, souvenir photograph cards, letters to Gulick (relating to Lewis and his publications, etc.) from M.L. Holbrook, E.P. Miller, Helen Castle Mead, E Dickinson, B.D. Marshall, Sarah A. Ashley, (?).G. Welch, Mrs. Dio Lewis, (?) Allen, D.A. Sargent, Edward Porter (?), L.L. Lewis, Edwin A. Jackson, Mrs. (?). O. Lincoln, E. Hitchcock, Elizabeth J. Weir; _____________________________________________________________________________________________

letter to Lewis from George Bellhorse (?), a copy of “Hermes’ Wand” (a handwritten song dedicated to Lewis) and “The Dumb Bells” (another handwritten song). There are also some loose materials in a manila envelope in the scrapbook; these include a note to Gulick from M.L. Holbrook, the poem “Ben Butler as Maud Muller,” letter to Gulick by Mrs. (?). A. Foster, Maria Louisa Ford, Miss L.E. (?) Holbrook, handwritten notes about Lewis, copies of Lewis newsletters “Lewisiana or the Lewis Letter” and “Dio Lewis’s Monthly,” letters presumably from Gulick to Rev. E. O. Porter, Miss Adele Chadbourne, Mr. C.S. Weld, and “Treasure Trove and Pupils’ Companion” containing Lewis’ article “Making an Experiment.”_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Roberts, November 2006 Revised by Rachael A. Salyer, August 2009 Shelf space occupied 9.5 linear feet Number of boxes 23 boxes (18 regular boxes and 5 scrapbook boxes) _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Luther Halsey Gulick Papers Page 2 Archives and Special Collections Babson Library, Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts ABSTRACT This collection documents the work of Luther Halsey Gulick (1865-1918) who was a pioneer and national leader in health and physical education in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. ORGANIZATION The collection is organized into 5 series, with the third series containing 7 sub-series: 1. Biographical Information (1918, 1960, 1992) 2. Springfield College (1892-1919) 3. Organizations and Correspondence (1891-1923) A. International Committee of the YMCA (1898) B. American Academy of Physical Education (1906-1911) C. General Correspondence (1893-1899) D. Amateur Athletic Union (1898-1899) E. Athletic League of YMCAs of North America (1897-1923) F. Triangle Publishing Company (ca. 1891-1895) G. Camp Fire Girls (1911-1917) 4. Gulick’s Writings (1887-1917) 5. Scrapbooks (1853-1910) ARRANGEMENT Wherever possible, the original order of the materials within this collection has been maintained. There are 14 formerly-bound volumes of Gulick’s writings, several bound volumes of correspondence, and 5 scrapbooks that were all presumably arranged by Gulick himself. Where the original order is unknown, the materials have been arranged by type, alphabetically, and/or chronologically._____________________________________________________________________________________________ Luther Halsey Gulick Papers Page 3 Archives and Special Collections Babson Library, Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts INFORMATION ON USE OF THE COLLECTION TERMS OF ACCESS AND USE Unrestricted PREFERRED CITATION Researchers wishing to cite this collection should include the following information (in addition to any other information required by the citation style being used): Luther Halsey Gulick Papers, series name, box #, folder #, Archives and Special Collections, Springfield College, Springfield, Mass. Gulick also designed the inverted, equilateral triangle emblem—denoting spirit, mind, and body—which became the official seal of Springfield College in 1891 and soon after became the _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Luther Halsey Gulick Papers Page 7 Archives and Special Collections Babson Library, Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts seal of the YMCA. SERIES DESCRIPTIONS SERIES 1: Biographical Information (undated, 1918, 1960, 1992) This series includes newspaper articles and obituaries about Gulick and several photographs of him. SERIES 2: Springfield College (1892-1919) This series contains annual reports, account sheets, receipts, etc. created by Gulick during his time at Springfield College. The account _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Luther Halsey Gulick Papers Page 9 Archives and Special Collections Babson Library, Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts sheets and receipts have been arranged chronologically. The timeframe of this series overlaps with much of the correspondence, etc. in Series 3. SERIES 3: Organizations and Correspondence (1893-1923) Because much of the correspondence within this collection pertains directly to Gulick’s professional activities with several national organizations, these two areas (correspondence and organizations) have been combined into one series. Sub-Series A: International Committee of the YMCA, 1898 The materials within this sub-series all relate to the international examination given by the International Committee during 1898. These materials include guidelines and test forms. They are arranged by type. Sub-Series B: American Academy of Physical Education, 1906-1911 In 1906 Gulick and several other professional physical educators created the Academy of Physical Education to organize meetings to discuss their recent work. Academy of Physical Education records include correspondence, minutes, and notes from 1906 to 1911. These materials are in the original order in which they were bound. Sub-Series C: General Correspondence, 1893-1899 This sub-series comprises Gulick’s incoming and outgoing correspondence that does not necessarily relate to the other organizations within the series. Pratt. Sub-Series D: Amateur Athletic Union, 1898-1899 The Amateur Athletic Union was founded in 1888 in order to help establish and promote standards in amateur athletics. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Luther Halsey Gulick Papers Page 10 Archives and Special Collections Babson Library, Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts Sub-Series E: Athletic League of YMCAs of North America, 1897-1923 Athletic League of YMCAs of North America was formed in the early 1890s in part to establish the Associations’ relationship to the A.A.U., and in part to serve the same functions of the A.A.U. within the Associations. 1891-1895 In February 1891 several students and instructors in the Physical Department of the International YMCA Training School (now Springfield College) created a serial publication entitled “The Triangle” (which later became “Physical Education”). Sub-Series G: Camp Fire Girls, 1911-1917 Gulick and his wife Charlotte founded the Camp Fire Girls—the first nonsectarian organization for girls in the United States—in 1910, and the organization was incorporated in Washington, D.C. in 1912 as a national agency. SERIES 4: Writings, 1887-1917 Throughout his career, Gulick was both a prolific author and lecturer. These writings concern the broad spectrum of topics in _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Luther Halsey Gulick Papers Page 11 Archives and Special Collections Babson Library, Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts which Gulick was interested, including physical education, play, hygiene and health, gender roles, camping, folk dancing, and amateur athletics. SERIES 5: Scrapbooks, 1853-1910 In this series are several scrapbooks of newspaper clippings and other ephemera created by or about Gulick including one he put together about physical education pioneer Dio Lewis. Scrapbook 1 (Items #1-254): The contents of this scrapbook date from March 1903 to September 1908. Nicholas Fund” Volunteers (Christmas charity), books causing injury to students, “Final Report of the Athletic Committee of the Schoolmasters’ Association,” “The Alleged Effemination of our American Boys,” dancing, fads, gymnastics, “Chautauqua” summer school programs, “Team Games and Civic Loyalty,” “The Gang Principle in Civic Education” by William Chauncy Langdon, “Dr Luther Gulick on the Scientific Investigation of the Problems of the Home,” letter on Public Schools Athletic League letterhead to General George W Wingate, health, sanitary conditions, “The Bicycle as a Therapeutic Agent,” “Athletics for City Children,” “Health of School Children,” and “Exercise Must be Interesting.” Scrapbook 2 (Items #255-346): All materials in this scrapbook date from January – March 1903. Rogers (President, Board of Ed NYC), Thomas Woods (Columbia), (?) Gaylord on behalf of Frederic _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Luther Halsey Gulick Papers Page 12 Archives and Special Collections Babson Library, Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts Pratt, Thomas M. Scrapbook 3 (Items #347-548 plus unnumbered items): This scrapbook contains several undated items and a few items from 1901 and 1903, but the majority of the materials here date from September 1907 to June 1910. Scrapbook 4 (unnumbered items): The articles in this scrapbook date from December 1906 to June 1910 and are mostly arranged chronologically. Scrapbook 5 (Dio Lewis): The spine of this scrapbook is labeled “Dio Lewis Scrapbook, and the front cover gives the title as “Dio Lewis Mss. Weir; _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Luther Halsey Gulick Papers Page 13 Archives and Special Collections Babson Library, Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts letter to Lewis from George Bellhorse (?), a copy of “Hermes’ Wand” (a handwritten song dedicated to Lewis) and “The Dumb Bells” (another handwritten song). C.S. Weld, and “Treasure Trove and Pupils’ Companion” containing Lewis’ article “Making an Experiment.”_____________________________________________________________________________________________ Luther Halsey Gulick Papers Page 14 Archives and Special Collections Babson Library, Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts SEARCH TERMS AND SUBJECTS The following terms represent persons, organizations, and topics documented in this collection.
