Springfield College Athletic Department:
Track and Field Team Papers
Box List
Box List Created on: 3/4/10
Box List Updated on: 1/19/12
Extent: 3.5 LF (3 boxes + Memorabilia + Film)
Arrangement Notes: Collection is arranged into Men’s and Women’s Materials, Men’s Track and Field teams, and Women’s Track and Field teams. Within these divisions, the collection uses the following order: News clippings, Photographs, Correspondence, Brochures, Drawings, Misc. Materials, and Film. Chronological order is kept wherever possible.
Processing Notes: Materials are minimally processed. Duplicates have been removed where found and materials have been minimally arranged and verified. Materials still may be misfiled or misidentified. Further processing should be undertaken at a later date.
Description Notes: There are two folders that contain information on both Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams. These materials consist of news releases, news articles, historical records and general information on both Men’s and Women’s Teams
Note: there may be some track and field brochures from both the men’s and women’s materials contained within Cross Country team papers due to the fact that sometime they were printed together.
In the men’s Track and Field materials there are news clippings, photographs from 1912-1987 (Note: many of the early team photos may very well be Cross Country and the Cross Country Photographs may be track – sometimes hard to tell and the photos were not investigated at this time) slides from 1985-1991, some oversized photographs, and brochures from 1909 through 2010, though there are many gaps, especially before the mid 1990’s. There are also two National Championship Brochures from 1940 and 1954, two drawings used in publications by Marketing and Communications, score cards from 1915-1983 – these are believed to be men’s but there could be women’s score cards mixed within, and a small 8 mm film of 1956 track meet between Springfield College and RPI – this has not been verified and is based on the markings on the film. There are two films that are marked Track Films by Leslie Judd, one that may be from 1942 and the other may have clips from the New England ICC Championship and a meet against Wesleyan and MIT but no date is given. Finally there are many plaques and trophies, including the A. G. Spaulding & Bros Eastern Intercollegiate Medley Relay Race Trophy given to SC for winning the May 9, 1925 race, 2 Champion plaques given by the Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (EICAA) in 1930 & 1931, 6 plaques given by the EICAA that say “Championship” on them from 1958, 59 61, 72, 73, & 74, a 1961 NCAA College Div. East Regional first place plaque, 4 plaques given for achievements in the ECAC Indoor Championships from 1989, 1990, 1996 and 2003-04, and 4 plaques given for achievements in the ECAC Outdoor Championships from 1990, 1991, 2001 and 2003.
In the women’s track and field materials there are a few news clips, a couple photographs, some slides from 1991, and brochures from the mid 1980’s to 2010, though there are many gaps before the mid 1990’s. Also included is the 1981 Women’s New England Intercollegiate Outdoor Track and Field Championship 2nd place silver trophy/plate.
Provenance Notes: There was no formal acquisition of the materials for this collection. The collection is artificially created. Materials were received from different places at different times. The acquisition sources and dates of the materials are unknown.
