Arrangement Notes: The Gymnastics collection is arranged into combined Men and Women gymnastics materials, the Women’s team materials, Men’s team materials, and Homeshow/Exhibition materials. Within the Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics Materials the materials are arranged by type of material and then by date if known. For the Women’s, Men’s and Homeshow/Exhibition materials, misc. materials/undated materials are arranged first, and then all materials are arranged by year. Films and memorabilia are stored separately.
Processing Note: Films have not been watched or verified. Information on the date and who is performing or what is happening was taken directly from writing on the film cases. Only check that was performed was to verify that gymnastics performances were on the film.
Materials are minimally processed. Duplicates have been removed where found and materials have been minimally arranged and verified. Materials still may be misfiled or misidentified. Further processing should be undertaken at a later date.
Note: due to the difficulty in separating exhibition materials from team materials, information is likely to overlap within the divisions noted in the arrangement notes; therefore, all sections should be checked.
Also, due to the shifting of schedules from year to year, especially with the Homeshow/Exhibition Teams, some material may be in the wrong year. Where ever possible an effort was made to determine the school year, but lacking that information, whatever year was listed on the item was used to place the item.
Description Notes: The collection consists of Gymnastics materials from 1890-2010. This includes class and club materials before and after an official Gymnastics team was established in 1904, both Men’s and Women’s team materials, Men’s team’s materials, Women’s teams materials, and the Homeshow/Exhibition Team materials. Among these materials there are News Clippings, Photographs, Slides, Rosters, Schedules, Programs and Brochures, and Films and Videos.
In the Men and Women Materials box, there are news clippings, photographs, including group pictures of captions, but identified and unidentified, and misc. materials that refer to both the Men’s and Women’s programs. Materials from the 1961 World’s Fair Exhibition and the 1966 Montreal Expo where the Men’s and Women’s teams performed, and publications called the “The Joy of Effort: The Story of Gymnastics at SC” and “Prelude to the Future, 1961-62” written by the gymnasts of the 1961-62 season are also included. There are three printed manuscript, “The Gymmie Final 1964”, “Springfield College Gymnastics 1963-64”, and “The Gymie Final 1964-65” that tell of the year’s events through both descriptive and statistical means. A series of posters from hosted Gymnastics Championships are represented, 1982, 1988, 1992, 1993, 2000 and a couple undated posters – not sure whether Springfield College Team Participated in these Championships or not at this time. Finally there are a couple of undated, misc. films that their exact nature is un-indentified.
In the Men’s boxes there are news clippings, photographs of teams, early gym classes and action photographs, programs and brochures, a few drawings and a group of undated gymnastics films and dated films from 1959, 1965, 1967 and 1971. Also included are some photographs from the 1925 Gymnastics Trip to Mexico including a picture of the team at the white house, a 1944 Freshman Gymnastics scrapbook, a 1983 Community Involvement photographs, and various Gymnastics Championship Publications.
In the Women’s boxes there are news clippings, photographs, schedules, brochures and pamphlets, and misc materials on athletes and seasons. There are also undated Newsletters (thought to be from the early seventies), articles on Kathy Corrigan, a 1996 issue of “The Springfield Club”, Regional, National, and Eastern Championships Material, in particular comprehensive materials on the first DGWS championship in 1969 including a film and posters that were signed in celebration of the championship and other championships throughout the seventies. There are also two undated Women’s Films and Films from the 1969 DGWS National Championships and the 1971 Eastern Championships.
In the Homeshow/Exhibition boxes there are photographs, slides, publications, news clippings, and programs. We have programs for all homeshows except the following years: 1904-1909, 1917-1922, 1924-1925, 1929, 1932-1938, 1943-1947, 1952, 1954, 1962, 1979, 1981, 1986, 1988-1991, 1994, 2002, 2004-2005, 2008, and 2010. There are also DVD and videos from 1972, 1977, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1993-1994, 1996-2004, 2006-2007, and 2009. There are also some misc films showing tableauxs, homeshows, and general exhibition performances, those dated are 1941, 1963, and 1966. Of special note is a document written by Frank Wolcott entitled “Living Statuary of Youth Tableaux” that outlines directions to create the tableaux.
Provenance Notes: The 1967-1968 to 1975-1976 Women’s Gymnastics materials mostly came from a September, 2008 acquisition (Z08-71) from Dr. Mimi Murray. The 1971 Women’s Gymnastics Eastern Finals S.C. 1971, DGWS Nationals 1969, and Floor Exercise Films were donated by Dr. Elizabeth Evans in August 1993. There is no clear record of where the rest of the films came from, though there was writing on a box where some films came from that said from Leslie Judd. The rest of the materials have no formal acquisition. The collection is artificially created with materials received from different places at different times.
