Arrangement Notes: The Basketball Collection is arranged into Early Basketball Materials (The Birth of Basketball), combined Men and Women team basketball materials, the Women’s team materials, and Men’s team materials. Women’s team materials are arranged as follows: Misc Materials, News clippings, photographs and slides, Programs, Schedules, Box Scores, and a Coaching Manual. The Men’s team materials are arranged as follows: history, misc. materials, news clippings, undated and misc. photographs, and team materials (including pictures, rosters, and brochures amongst other materials) arranged by year. Within these materials, chronological order is kept wherever possible. Films are stored separately.
Processing Note: Films have not been watched or verified. Information on the date and who is playing was taken directly from the film cases. Only check that was performed was to verify that a basketball game was on the film.
Materials are minimally processed. Duplicates have been removed where found and materials have been minimally arranged and verified. Materials still may be misfiled or misidentified. Further processing should be undertaken at a later date.
Description Notes: The Basketball Collection documents the creation of basketball, the early years of basketball played at Springfield College, and the records, members and documents created by Basketball teams, including men and women’s teams from 1891 through the present.
Within the Early Basketball materials there is historical information on the creation of basketball, including copies of the announcement of the creation of basketball in the January 15, 1892 edition of the “The Triangle”, articles about the creation of basketball, including all copies of “Basketball was Born Here”, information on the first players from the class that Naismith created the game for, news clippings, and copies of the photograph of the first basketball team, a collection of the players who may have traveled to exhibit the game with Naismith during the first year of its creation. There is also copy of Hello Pioneer Valley from August 1992 with an article entitled “Basketball born in Holyoke: Give Credit Where Credit is due” By John “Dutch” Egloff that speaks to Dr. George Gabler of Holyoke as actually inventing Basketball. Finally, included are two copies of “The Birth of Basketball” by Alex Omalev and a transcribed copy of the March 12, 1892 Springfield Republican article about the March 11, 1892 Basketball game between students and faculty where Almos Alonzo Stagg scored the only basket for the Faculty in a 5-1 game. The combined Men & Women’s materials contain Basketball Alumni materials including a 1991 Reunion Banquet video, press releases on both the men’s and women’s teams from various years, and combined yearbooks of both the men’s and women’s teams from the 1981-82 teams through the 1999-2000 teams.
In the Women’s materials there are news clippings from 1981-1992, photographs and slides mostly from 1980’s and early 1990’s, some slides of a 1991 trip to Ireland and programs and pamphlets from 1983-84 through the present. There are some gaps in programs both by year and by individual games. Also included are some trophies or commemorative bowls, including the Ruth Evans Basketball Trophies (1950’s-60’s), the 1976 EAIAW Northeast District Basketball Championship consolation trophy, the 1977 EAIAW Northeast District Basketball Championship 4th place trophy, and 1981 EAIAW Northeast District Basketball Championship 1st place trophy
Within the men’s materials there is the 1891-1970 Basketball Story, Rosters of teams through the modern era (most included in the teams by year folders), a collection of materials of the Men’s Basketball team 1965 Far East/World Tour, including slides, newspaper articles and scrapbooks and some memorabilia, newsletters from the Top of the Key Club 1980’s through 1990’s (with lots of gaps), 1999 Men’s Alumni Reunion Videos (3), misc. news clippings, including a 1927-28 news article scrapbook, undated action, individual and team photos, and Photographs, Slides, Rosters, Schedules, Trophies, Programs, Yearbook, and film and videos from individual team and years from 1893 through the present. There are many gaps in the materials and some years have no materials - folders will have to be checked for exact listings. Film and Video’s are listed in the Box List. Of special note is a book with statistics, 1894 letters written by team managers for the 1893-94 season of games played by students and faculty at Springfield College, including a letter written by James Naismith, a book that rosters and box scores from league games played at Springfield College in 1894-95 season, a souvenir program from 1937 game from a game played in Madison Square Garden, and an article written by Hal Lynch about the UMass vs. SC game played on Feb. 16, 1971 when “Dr. J” Julius Erving played for UMass. There is also a 2010 Springfield College Basketball DVD from games from the 1960’s to the 1980’s (played at the Naismith Exhibit of March 2010), containing clips from the following games: 1965 SC vs. Hartford, 1968-69 SC vs. Central Ct., 1974-75 SC vs. Bentley, 1981-82 SC vs. AIC and 1973-74 SC vs. Assumption College (we also have the complete reels on DVD of these games).
