Arrangement Notes: The Athletic Department Papers are arranged into the following series: General Materials, Camps, Women’s Programs, Printed Materials, Banquets/Dinners/Functions, Athletic Hall of Fame, and Hosted Events. Due to the fact that collection is minimally processed, these series may change, including being removed as research finds they do not belong in the Athletic Department Papers, title changed or additional series being added as more information is gained. Within these materials, materials are separated by type and chronological order is kept wherever possible.
Processing Note: Materials are minimally processed. Duplicates have been removed where found and materials have been minimally arranged and verified. Materials still may be misfiled or misidentified. Further processing should be undertaken at a later date.
Description Notes:
General Materials
The General Materials series contains general history on the Sports Programs at Springfield College, information on alumni and alumni functions, schedules and records of various teams, misc. trophies and awards, and news articles and news releases on Springfield College Sports Teams and the Athletic Department, mostly from the 1980’s and ‘90’s. Also included are general photographs of classes and sports activities not directly attached to a Springfield College Team.
Women’s Programs
Included in the Women’s Programs series is information on Women’s Programs as a whole rather than individual sports. The materials included are schedules and media guides, and materials on the 25th anniversary of the establishment of women’s programs at Springfield College. The vast majority of the series is taken up by the WAA (Women’s Athletic Association) and the WRA (Women’s Recreation Association) records that replaced it in 1964. The WAA acted to “…promote and conduct an extra-curricular sports program for women in accordance with the highest ideals in women’s sports, as well as promoting interest in athletics & good sportsmanship.” There are the WAA minutes from 1953 to 1962, records of individual sports played from 1954-1970 in the manager reports (including listings of students who played), and yearly materials from the early ‘60s through the mid ‘70s that include materials such as handbooks, banquet brochures, memos, meeting minutes, constitution and by-law materials, and other materials from the people who ran the program. Beyond the WAA materials there is also a women’s drill team uniform from the mid to late fifties, drill team pins and pocket patch, and a digitized 1954 Channel 22 Film news reel about the 1954 Drill Team (no sound).
Printed Materials
The Printed Materials series contains various printed brochures and pamphlets that apply to the Springfield College Sports Programs as a whole, Newsletters including the Maroon Sports newsletter from 1959-1962, the Alumni Sportsletter from 1970-72, and the Springfield Club newsletter from 1985-2010 (with many gaps), and Sports Schedules, mostly divided in Fall, Winter and Spring Sports, from 1921-present.
Banquets/Dinners/Functions
The Banquets/Dinners/Functions series includes programs and announcements from early dances, functions of the Maroon Club, and Sports Recognition Banquets from, mostly from 1966 through 1998.
Athletic Hall of Fame
The Athletic Hall of Fame series includes information on the Springfield College Athletic Hall of Fame. Included in the collection are the programs, news releases and articles, plaques, and videos from induction ceremonies from 1972 to the present.
Hosted Events
The Hosted Events series contains programs, news articles, media booklets, and misc. information on events that Springfield College either sponsored, assisted with, hosted and/or, perhaps, participated. Some of the events were held on Campus while others were not. In addition, there are most likely some materials that Springfield College had no direct involvement, but just collected the materials produced. Of particular note are materials on the NCAA Div. II basketball championships, the Tip-Off Classic, and the Naismith Classic; brochures from the Tom Hay Women’s Volleyball Invitational; brochures on the Doug Parker Wrestling Invitational; and brochures on the Annual Springfield College Golf Classic. Other events such as the Massachusetts Special Olympics and the Senior Games are held in their own collections
